Old stumps look bad and they cause real problems. They become tripping hazards as the surrounding grass grows back. They attract carpenter ants and termites that can move from the stump to your house. They sucker — sending up new growth from the root system every spring for years. And they make it impossible to mow flush over the area or plant anything new.
Grinding a stump below grade fixes all of that in one visit. The area is immediately ready for grass, sod, mulch, or a flower bed — or in a few months once the chips have decomposed, ready for a new tree if you want one.
A stump grinder is a hydraulic-driven machine with a cutting wheel covered in carbide teeth that chew through wood at high speed. We position the grinder over the stump and work the cutting wheel side-to-side, lowering it incrementally until we've removed all the wood down to the depth requested.

Standard residential grinding is 6–12 inches below grade. That covers most use cases:

Stump grinding is generally priced by diameter at the base (inches across), with most residential stumps falling in the $75–$300 range. Multiple stumps at one address are usually bundled for a better per-stump rate.
Things that affect the quote:
A stump grinder removes the visible stump plus the major root flare — but lateral roots underground stay put. If you want to plant a new tree exactly where the old one stood, plan to plant 4+ feet away from the old stump. Otherwise the existing root mass interferes with the new tree's root development.
We grind stumps for residential and commercial customers across Bowling Green and surrounding South-Central Kentucky.
